How to Troubleshoot Camera Issues During a Test

This article offers guidance for addressing camera issues that may arise during proctored tests, particularly when the camera is not detected during the equipment check.

Allow Camera Permission on Google Chrome
If you are using Google Chrome, follow these instructions:

1. Click the site information icon in the left corner of the address bar.
2. Select the Site Settings option.

3. In the Site Settings webpage, click the dropdown menu next to the camera icon and select Allow.




Change the used Camera on Google Chrome
If you are using an external Camera, you may need to change the default camera used by the browser. To select the correct camera that should be used by Google Chrome, follow the steps below:

1. Click the three dots icon in the top right corner of your browser window.
2. Navigate to Settings.
3. On the left side, select Privacy and Security.




4. Select Site Settings.



5. Navigate to the permissions section and select Camera.




6. In the drop-down menu, select the desired camera.




For Mozilla Firefox
If you are using Mozilla Firefox, follow these instructions:

1. Click the three lines icon in the top right corner of your browser window.
2. Navigate to the Settings.
3. On the left side, select Privacy & Security.
4. Scroll down to find camera settings and click on the Settings button. When the pop-up window appears, you can specify which websites are allowed to access your camera.





Checking Camera Usage in Your Computer’s Settings
In addition, you can also allow camera usage in your computer’s settings:

1. In the search box in the bottom left corner of your screen, enter “camera”.
2. Open Camera privacy settings.
3. Confirm that camera usage is allowed.
4. Scroll down the page and confirm that camera usage is permitted for the browser you are using for taking a test.


Changing the used camera in Your Windows’ Settings
To use an external camera, you may need to manually change the selected camera in your system settings by following the steps below:

1. Press Windows + X, and click Device Manager.
2. Click Camera devices.
3. Right-click on the integrated webcam.
4. Click Disable




Enabling the camera permission during the test
In the event that the camera stops working during the test due to internet connection issues, follow these steps to resolve the problem:

1. Click on the site information icon in the address bar’s left corner.
2. Enable the camera permission from the dropdown menu.
3. After enabling the camera permission, reload the exam tab to continue the exam.

  1. If none of these solutions work, you may want to consider using an external camera or another laptop.
  2. You should use your personal device to take the test because work-provided devices may have security settings that restrict access to the test. Without the administrator’s permission, it is impossible to change the security settings and allow the website to access your camera.
