Troubleshooting Microphone Issues for Proctored Tests: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Troubleshoot Microphone Issues During a Test

This article offers guidance for addressing microphone issues that may arise during proctored tests, particularly when the microphone is not detected during the equipment check.

For Google Chrome
1. Click the three dots icon in the top right corner of your Chrome browser.
2. Navigate to the Settings option.
3. On the left side of the Settings menu, select Privacy and Security.
4. Under the Permissions section, click on Site Settings.

5. Look for the Microphone option and click on it.
6. Confirm that the Get Certified application is allowed to use your microphone. If not, select the GC application and allow microphone usage. Make sure that you are using the correct microphone.

For Mozilla Firefox
If you are using Mozilla Firefox, follow these instructions:

1. Click the three-line icon in the top right corner of your browser window.
2. Navigate to the Settings.
3. On the left side of the Settings menu, select Privacy and Security.
4. Scroll down to find Microphone settings and click on the Settings button. When the pop-up window appears, you can specify which websites are allowed to access your microphone.

Note: If the microphone is enabled but still doesn’t work, disable it and enable it again.

Checking Camera Usage in Your Computer’s Settings
Make sure that access to the microphone is allowed in your system settings:

1. In the search box in the bottom left corner, enter “microphone”.
2. Open Microphone privacy settings.
3. Confirm that microphone usage is allowed.
4. Scroll down the page and confirm that microphone usage is permitted for the browser you are using to take the test. Make sure that you are using the correct microphone.

Best Practices and Tips
  1. If the microphone still doesn’t work after trying the above steps, try using headphones with a built-in microphone or another computer to take the test.
  2. You should use your personal device to take the test because work-provided devices may have security settings that restrict access to the test. Without the administrator’s permission, it is impossible to change the security settings and allow the website to access your microphone.
  3. These steps may vary slightly depending on your operating system and browser version.
